50 years of Bangladesh’s Independence: Bangladesh invited PM Modi to join celebrations.

Bangladesh has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the celebrations of the 50 years of the country’s independence. The country will complete its 50 years of Independence on March 26, 2021.

Independence day of Bangladesh

The Independence Day of Bangladesh is observed on 26 March every year. The day commemorates the Bangladesh’s declaration of independence from Pakistan. The leader of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had declared its independence from Pakistan on 26 March 1971.

Background

Bangladesh got its independence from Pakistan after the Bangladesh Liberation War. The war is also known as the Bangladesh War of Independence or the Liberation War. It was a revolution and armed conflict that was spread and sparked by the Bengali nationalist and self-determination movement in East Pakistan (Current Bangladesh) during 1971 Bangladesh genocide. The war began on 25 March 1971 and ended on 16 December 1971 after West Pakistan (Current Pakistan) surrendered. The Bangladeshi Declaration of Independence was proclaimed by members of Mukti Bhahini from Chittagong.

India’s Role

India had also joined the war on 3 December 1971 in the aftermath of  Pakistan’s launch of air strikes on North India. Since, India and Bangladesh had achieved air supremacy in the eastern theatre and allied forces of Bangladesh and India were advanced, Pakistan surrendered to Dacca on 16 December 1971.

Consequence

The war changed the geopolitical landscape in South Asia. Bangladesh emerged as the seventh-most populous country in the world. Majority of member states in the United Nations recognised Bangladesh as a sovereign nation in 1972.
